With saloons and spas temporarily closed, many of us are taking to at home hair removal. Shaving hair might be easy but it only cuts hair off the skin surface.  While Waxing is considered to be a semi-permanent hair removal method because it removes the hair from the root.

There are so many different waxes that it can sometimes be confusing even knowing which product to choose. Choosing the right wax can also help reduce discomfort and generally result in a smoother experience. We have made a list of waxes to help you choose the best wax suited for your skin.

1. Hot wax

Hot wax is designed to shrink-wrap around the hair follicle, removing it from the root without pulling at the skin. It is applied by being spread along the skin and once dried in a few seconds, it is easily removed by lifting the corner with your fingers and pulled against the hair grain.

Which is better hot wax or cold wax?

Well Cold wax strips may need be applied repeatedly at the same area to remove all hair. Meanwhile, hot wax uses melted wax, and may or may not require strips.Because hot wax traps hair tightly than cold wax strips, it is not only more effective, it is better at removing shorter hair.

2. Warm Wax

With warm wax the wax is spread over the area after which a paper strip is pressed over it to adhere to both the wax and hairs, and then pulled off removing the hairs in that area from the root.

Warmed to a slightly higher temperature, hot wax is a much thicker wax made up of wax too to allow it to set hard. It is applied to the skin, allowed to cool and set, and then pulled directly off without the use of a paper strip.

3. Pre- lined Strip waxes

The wax strips are effective on hair 1.5mm or longer, you don't have to wait as long between waxes! If you're looking for fast hair removal results, Veet wax strips are ready-to-use and enable you to remove hair instantly without having to warm the wax in a microwave.

Is hot wax or strip wax better?

Hot wax is spread thickly onto the skin and allowed to dry slightly before it's gently peeled away. The benefits include fewer in-grown hairs, less breakage and therefore longer re-growth periods. Strip wax is recommended for thicker/less sensitive skin, for example legs, arms, back , chest and shoulders.

What temperature is warm wax?

55-65 degrees
Both Hot & Strip Waxes are used at warm temperatures. As a guide, the recommended operating temperature of hot wax is 55-65 degrees, whilst strip wax is used at around 65-70 degrees. A wax pot is essential for correct application as it enables you to work with consistent, safe temperatures.

The important question is,

Which type of wax is best?

Soft wax adheres to skin more than hard wax, exfoliating skin more. Soft wax grabs fine hairs perfectly, working better on large areas of the body than hard wax. Unlike hard wax, soft wax cannot be applied to the same spot twice because it removes layers of dead skin. Hot wax traps hair tightly than cold wax strips, it is not only more effective, it is better at removing shorter hair.

If you are using cold wax to remove the hair of your arm pit, following are the steps;

Make the skin above the strip taut before pulling it off quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. Repeat until all hair has been removed and clean off excess wax with a wipe, or waxing lotion/ oils.

Is waxing better than shaving?

Waxing makes the skin soft and smooth whereas shaving leaves rashes and rough skin. In the waxing procedure, it not only removes the hair but also exfoliates the dead skin. Exfoliation of dead skin cells makes the skin soft and smooth. Shaving removes the hair from the surface and makes them blunt.

Are there any disadvantages of waxing?

Well, the first disadvantage, as everyone knows, is the pain factor. Let's be honest here; waxing means, pulling hair out of the skin, literally. Even though you eventually get accustomed to the pain, you can still feel the pain of ripping the hair out of the skin, especially in sensitive areas.

What are the benefits of hot wax?

The advantages of hot wax are that they promote skin hydration with all its natural and soothing ingredients which leaves your skin feeling smooth and completely hair-free, hence making them more suitable for more sensitive skin. Hot wax also lessens the chance of skin reddening.

What to Do After a Bikini Wax

  1. Avoid the sun. Stay clear of the sun's direct rays for at least 48 hours or until the redness has gone away.
  2. Let your skin breathe. This is very important.
  3. Soaking and steam isn't good.
  4. No body lotion until the redness goes away.
  5. Exfoliate.
  6. Have products ready.
  7. Don't take a hot bath for the rest of the day, as soaking in water could cause unnecessary irritation or pimples.
